How to Jump-start Another Car

One way to improve your situation with a dead car battery is having jumper cables and another running vehicle close by. Jump-starting a vehicle is straightforward, but it does take care and certain precautions. Begin with the two cars’ batteries about a foot and a half apart and on level ground.

Each end of the cables will have two clamps. One is usually denoted with a stripe or is red, and that is your positive cable. The black cable on each end is negative. Be very careful when you begin attaching cables; you don’t want them accidentally touching metal. First attach the red/positive cable to the positive terminal on the dead battery and attach the black/negative to the same battery. Once you have both cables connected to the dead battery, repeat the process on the good battery. Let it charge for a minute or so and rev the live engine.

If you cannot get the car to start after three or four tries, then you should stop. There could be an issue with the battery or other aspect of the charging system.
